April 28 Sub Series Finals

April 9, 2018

The finals are coming up and the schedule for the day is the same as the past ones.  You can find that HERE.

We will be running the tournament as normal with the winner of the Adult No Gi Season receiving their trophy.

We are also doing this for the kids BJJ divisions for children 8 and up.  These divisions have proved a bit challenging as some kids have moved up in age, weight and belt but we are still trying to figure out something that is fair and rewarding for the children.

We look forward to seeing everyone out for this final Sub Series of the season.  You are more than welcome to come out if you missed the other events.  Not a problem.  Please look at the schedule for times and please do not show up earlier than needed as paring is limited.

You are more than welcome to come out.

We have been getting a great amount of kids coming out and adults have been steady, but ladies… let’s get out here this time.

See everyone soon,

New Season Starts up With Some Changes

September 7, 2017

The new season is coming up fast and we have a few changes this year that will offer a new challenge to some of the competitors looking for something different.

Instead of the Finalist competing for a Belt at the end of the season, we are having Custom Trophies done for the winner of the Divisions for the Championship Divisions AND for Children 8 and up.  All 4 events will be counted towards the final score and the person with the highest score will be presented the trophy at the final event April 28.

DOWNLOAD THE POSTER HERE

For winning an event the scores awarded are:

1st = 5 points

2nd = 3 points

3rd = 2 points

4th and on = 1 point

For the Children, they will collect their points for each event at the age they are at the beginning of the season Sept 30.  We will have a trophy for the child that has the highest score in the 8/9, 10/11, 12/13, 14-16 year old divisions.  Although some of these divisions will have more than one weight class, we will be only giving a trophy the the child that has the highest score in that age group.  In the event of a tie between two children in different weight classes, we will award the child who has the best individual event scores.

For example, if child #1 in the light weight division has a score of 4,4,4,4 =16 and child #2 in the heavy weight division has a score of 5,3,4,4 = 16 then the winner will be child #2 because of the 5 point (1st place) score.

I have been wanting to do something special for the children for sometime now.  We have put some thought into this and hope to make this a fair and fun series this year.

Please be sure to read the rules for the event HERE if you have any questions please email me at myackulic@arashido.com

We look forward to having everyone out this year,

Mike Yackulic

New Season Starting Soon!

August 28, 2016

I have been having a lot of emails about when the Submission Series will be starting up.

Sept 24!

We will be having this one at our North Location on 12730 St. Albert Trail.  We are looking at mixing things up this year in a couple ways.  One thing we will be doing is moving the series around to other host schools.  We are also looking at one big change for the kids… more on that soon, just finalizing some details first.

bjj-tournament-6056_27307969860_o

Kids are coming out in HUGE numbers to compete and having a blast!

This year will be the same format as the others.  Gi then No Gi in the morning for the kids, No Gi then Gi in the afternoon for the adults.  The schedule will be very similar to the past as well as the rules with a few exceptions.  Please check the rules which will be updated by August 31.

There have been a few consistent questions over the many years we have had this tournament, so here are some and their answers.  If you have any questions please ask so I can add them to the list.

Are beginners welcome?

ABSOLUTELY! We actually have more beginners than Advanced show up for these events.  We also have a separate division for beginners/recreational competitors in the No Gi division.

Can I still come out if I miss a tournament?

Yes.  We have four parts to this Series but that only matters if you are going to compete for the Adult No Gi competition Belt.

How do you calculate the scores for the Championships?

We take your top three scores and add them together to  see who the top 4 people are that will compete for the Championship Belt.

What if there is only 2 people in a division… or 3?

If there are only 2 people in a division we will do a best 2 out of 3 to give a chance for more experience.  If there are 3 people we will follow what is laid out by the IBJJF as per the picture below.  To see the rules for the IBJJF please visit: http://ibjjf.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/RulesIBJJF_v4_en-US.pdf

When can I weigh in?

You can weigh in 1 hour before your event is scheduled to start.  For younger children who start off the day please only come 30 minutes early.

When are the other dates?

Part 1 is Sept 24, Part 2 is Dec 10, Part 3 is Feb 11, Part 4 is April 1 and the Finals will be at the Mind Body Soul June 3.

I don’t train at a club or I train at a non-Arashi Do club, can I still come out?

You bet, this is an open tournament and we encourage everyone to come out.

Good luck for those coming out, we will see you September 24.

Next Series Dates

January 28, 2016

We have been holding back releasing dates for the next 2 Submission Series events due to the number of other events going on in Alberta.

The following dates are:

March 5 (this is tentative as the Capital City Championship is March 19… so this may get moved or cancelled)

May 7. This is set.

The Mind Body Soul will be on June 18 this year and we are looking forward to having a pre-registration process identical to the CBJJF events (same company doing it) which we expect will vastly improve our schedule. We will also be bring in a very experienced Black Belt to referee the whole day. Lots of other changes too, but that will come later.

We love putting on the smaller Submission Series events but we don’t want to over saturate the market and that is starting to happen.

IF you love coming out the the sub series, let us know so we are aware of the interest and we will try harder to find a date that will work for the other promoters.

Please check back for confirmation of the March 5th event.

Love and respect,

Mike Yackulic
