WHO:
This tournament is open to anyone who competes with a healthy and respectful attitude. Divisions will be held for: children under 9 (game), children 10 – 12 (gi & no gi) and teenagers 13 – 15 (gi & no gi). Adult divisions will be in gi and no gi for ages 16 and up. The tournament organizers will do their best to ensure a positive tournament experience. This may include splitting up or joining divisions based on attendance. If you have any questions please talk to one of the organizers BEFORE your division begins.
WHAT (format and rules):
No Gi and Children divisions will be DOUBLE ELIMINATION. This is not a true double elimination style. If you lose a match you will go to a “B” bracket where the best you could finish is 3rd.
The Championship Tournament (for the Custom Belt) will be single elimination. You cannot enter into both the Recreational Tournament and the Championship Tournament.
Children under 9 will compete in a grappling game. The game will consist of two 45 second rounds. One child will start on their back with the other child inside their guard. The objective is for the bottom player to stand up and for the top player to pass the guard and establish a position. 1 point is awarded for each successful attempt. After 45 seconds the roles are reversed. The child with the most points wins. Children will be split up according to weight based on who shows up. We will do our best to make matches fair, this may mean smaller divisions, or a best of 3 matches scenario.
Official IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) can be found here
http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm
Although we strive to follow the rules as laid out by the IBJJF, we will be making exceptions to some of the rules. Exceptions are listed below.
10 to 12 years old (NO SUBMISSIONS) starting from a seated position with legs crossed (for safety).
Weight classes are: Under 80 lbs, 81 – 100 lbs and 101 lbs and up.
Matches are 2:00 minutes in length
Points will be awarded for specific positions, refer to the Scoring section. In the case of a child getting pinned for more that 10 seconds, the referee will give a warning for movement. If the competitors are unable to move the children will get restarted in the seated position. This is to not only encourage movement but to prevent the children from being frustrated with not being able to escape a position.
Ages 13 – 15 (Basic submissions allowed, please refer to page 22 of the rules for a list of illegal submission or fouls). Teens will start from standing. If the competitor is not confident with throws or falling, we recommend that teen to start on their butt. Teens will not be restarted if stuck in a position.
Weight classes are: Under 100 lbs, 101 to 125 lbs and 126 lbs and up.
Matches are 3:00 minutes in length.
Points are awarded for specific positions, see Scoring section.
Ages 16 and up (submissions, except those labelled as illegal in the rules section)
Under 140, 141-155, 156-170, 171-185, 185-205, 206 and up.
Match length is 4:00 minutes
Points are awarded for specific positions, see the Scoring section.

Warnings and potential loss of points for competitors intentionally rolling out of the ring to avoid a submission or demonstrate a lack of desire to engage in combat.
B) Technique Summary:
Striking with any part of the body is prohibited. Competitors found to be with intent to strike or cause harm to their opponent will be disqualified and asked to leave the venue. The following techniques are permitted.
Chokes:
Any choke that renders the opponent into submission. Chokes can be applied with either the arms or legs. Competitors can not apply chokes by directly squeezing opponent’s throat with hand.
Joint Locks:
Any technique where controlled pressure is applied against a joint forcing opponent to submit. Competitors are permitted to use standard arm locks, inverted arm locks, shoulder locks, wrist locks and straight foot locks. Techniques which require twisting or bending of the leg are prohibited. We the promoters feel that we would rather have our competitors walk home healthy than limp home sore.
IF YOU CANNOT ESCAPE FROM A TECHNIQUE AND ARE EXPERIENCING DISCOMFORT, SUBMIT BY VISIBLY TAPPING THE GROUND OR OPPONENT OR TELLING THE REFEREE. In some cases the referee may stop a match based on the perceived danger ie. your arm is caught fully extended in an armbar, if you are not properly defending, the referee may stop the match. Do not argue with the referee. We encourage sportsmanship and competitive spirit, so please if you feel that your submission is in any way going to harm your opponent, carefully monitor your opponent’s reaction.
C) Attire and safety equipment
Mouth guards are recommended. No protective gear shall contain metal or hard plastic substances of any sort. No adhesive, rough, torn or loose equipment will be permitted. Competitors with long hair should tie it behind their head. The nails must be filed properly and cut short. Proper hygiene is in order. No jewelry is permitted while competing. A freshly washed shirt and shorts must be worn. If your clothing becomes bloodied or torn, you will be asked to replace it immediately or forfeit the match. All patches must secure and free of any loose threads. No males are allowed to wear rashguards or shirts under their Gi.
D) Skill level break down:
There is no skill level break down in this tournament except for the Adult Gi division, which will be white belts in one division and blue and up in the other.
E) Scoring:
Mount 4 points
Rear Mount 4 points
Passing Guard 3 points
Guard Sweeps 2 points
Knee on Belly 2 points
Takedowns 2 points
Positions must be held for 3 seconds to obtain points, after which the referee will award points. No advantages will be called. If the match does not end in submission the match will be decided on who has more points. If there is still a tie then the referee will decide the winner based on aggressiveness.
Winners will be decided by:
Submission
Race to 16. First to receive 16 points wins
Competitor with the most points
Disqualification
Injury (this includes nose bleeds that are unable to stop)
Referee Decision.
WHY:
We are trying to make steps towards a respected Provincial caliber event and we believe this method of qualifying will do just that. Finals will be held at the November 10th “Brock Myrol Memorial Tournament” held in Red Deer.
The referee will NOT give an overview of the rules, it is the competitor’s responsibility to review the rules themselves and bring up questions with their coach or email inquires to myackulic@arashido.com . Competitors will begin their match on their feet and then instructed to engage. As this is a grappling tournament, competitors will not be separated once the match goes to the ground unless submission occurs, and infraction of the rules or time expires.
If you have any questions please contact Mike Yackulic at myackulic@arashido.com
Best of luck to everyone this year,
Mike Yackulic
Tournament Director

As for the race to 16 points, is there a minimum point spread, or can you win 16-15?
There is no point spread. First to 16 wins… so yes 16-15.
So no protective cups? The loss of knee bars is rather disapointing.
No you do not need a cup, you can wear one if you like.
The change on rules over knee bars has been aggreed upon by several of Alberta’s BJJ Blackbelts.
We feel this will be safer for the bulk of the competitors. Knee bars will be allowed at the Mind Body Soul for the Purple belt and up division.
Hope to see you out, spread the word.
Mike
Why are we not allowed to wear rash guards under our Gi’s?
Hi Matt, rashguards (or any clothing) is not allowed under the gi beacuse fingers get caught up in it and make it more difficult to apply chokes. Thanks for the question, Mike Yackulic
So how come there arent any Leglocks aloud ?
For the safety of the competitors, only Straight Ankle locks are allowed.
For Other leg locks such as Knee bars, bent ankle locks and such you need to compete at on of the larger events around Alberta and be a Purple belt or up.
Question: Is each “Part” a separate competition? This isn’t clear to me.
If I enter into Part 2 and lose for example, can I enter into Part 3?
As a white belt, I don’t want to enter Part 2 if I don’t feel prepared, but will I face a more skilled set of competitors if I enter later, into part 3 and 4?
Hope my questions are clear enough.
Thanks.
You can enter all parts or just one. The better you do at each one the more “Points” you collect to take into the finals.
The No Gi division is All Levels and the BJJ is white belts or Blue and up.
If my child is 12 and wieghs over 120lbs, why does he always get put in with the 13-15 group? shouldn’t he still qualify as a child, not a teen? He is always sparring with 12 and under children. I don’t feel it is fair that he always gets put in with the next category because of his weight. I feel this way because due to hid Autism, he is mentally at the age of a 9 year old.
Hi Stacy,
The reason he gets put with the older youths is that there is no one his size and age to compete with.
The only options I have is have him go against someone older but the same weight or not compete.
If you can think of a more fair solution, please let me know.
Thank you,
Mike Yackulic
Hello, just wondering where is the location of the March 3 tournament in Calgary? Thanks.
I will be posting it this week
Hi, I want to know, categorize divisions (ei: division 1) and also if I wanted to compete both Gi and No-Gi can I? And if I could, would I have to pay twice?
You can compete in two divisions. $30 for one, $40 for two divisions.
Not sure about what your first question means? Division 1?
Are the weigh ins exclusively the day of or are there day before weigh ins?
Hi Juan,
Day of only
